Week Two - Chosen Exemplar Building
Once researching all three exemplar buildings I came to the decision of further analysing Shaun Lockyer's Balaam Residence. The overall concept of the house and how the client brief was achieved was very impressive. The incorporation of grand scales with intimate spaces was very prominant and achieved through such precision. The use of natural materials and green features is very fitting with today's economic situation and this should be achieved in all future projects.
Analysis through the design and construction drawings of the Balaam Residence will follow:

A House is an Environmental Filter
The Balaam Residence, situated on the Brisbane River, takes full advantage of the Queensland weather and its location. The house "animates the street, river boardwalk, both with form and sculptures." It is designed with large family outdoor decking areas, absorbing the Queensland lifestyle. The house is fitted with natural sustainable materials (zinc aluminium, concrete, rich timbers, and raw battens), aswell as green features including rain water harvesting, solar hot water system, cross ventilation etc. "Living areas and the outdoor living spaces provide protection from the elements, views and cross ventilation".

The Casa Tolo is positioned in the Portuguese mountainous terrains. It is set back into the mountain as if it were to be cascading down the steep slope. the architect has take full aesthetic advantage by positioning the house into the slope, providing a flowing value to the space. It has been angled in such a way to take complete advantage of the valley views, not obstucting from the natural surroundings. The house faces south, receiving optimal solar exposure and views of the surrounding terrain. Casa Tolo is naturally unified with the landscape responding to its natural setting.
