Week Four - Final Cabin Design

INFINITE CABIN - Designed for the use of Shaun Lockyer (Arkhefield)

A House is an Environmental Filter

The Infinite Cabin has been designed fitting to the client's brief. It was said to absorb its surroundings through the use of public and private space. Although the site location is quite close to both neighbours and the Hierarchy Highway the clients require a very open space where indoor and outdoor have no limits.

Keeping with a sustainable design, natural materials i.e. hardwood and green features i.e. rain water tanks and solar hot water systems were included. The significant use of glass openings were important with incorporating the indoor areas with the outdoor areas. Not only were they used to take full advantage of the views but they also allowed natural lighting to flood into the space. The large glass openings completely open from floor to ceiling allowing the space to flow whilst allowing ventilation to circulate through the space.
The use of vegetation played a prominent part in the privacy value of the site. Vegetation was used to surround the entire cabin blocking noise pollution and providing privacy from surrounding neighbours and the highway whilst acting as a barrier from direct sunlight. This Eco friendly cabin absorbs nature, displaying infinite opportunities.

A House is a Container of Human Activities

The cabin comfortably provides two people with living, dining, food preparation, sleeping, working, reflecting and abluting spaces. The importance of segregation between public and private space was imperative to the client. Each activity performed in the cabin has its own space coinciding with the adjacent spaces. The entire cabin is position off a large outdoor timber deck which coexists as the living space. As each glass tilt-a-door opens the fluidity of the spaces are apparent.

A House is a Delightful Experience

Surrounded by vegetation this Eco cabin truly is one with nature. Once entering the cabin the immediate direction is through the glass openings out to the sites garden and beyond to Virtual Views.

As this cabin is used for two people the use of glass is prominent, providing a sense of openness with the companions as well as with nature. Each space can only be entered by walking down the timber deck through the glass doors positioned in the glass frontage of each space, bringing one out with nature.
The abluting space is quite conventional with a toilet, basin and robe space. The shower/spa has been set into the floor providing an open scale space. It is positioned against two glass openings allowing the user to feel amidst nature, creating a relaxed space. Detached from the main living space is the sleeping and reflecting spaces. Again with glass walls, this space is purely for sleeping and reflection. There are no interruptions with nothing but sitting and sleeping facilities set amongst the surrounding gardens.
Finally the working space has been completely segregated from the entire ground level. This was done to create a statement that work and leisure time need to be separated in everyday life. This was achieved through positioning the stairs over the garden. It is important to create a different feeling before entering this space, whether it be relaxing, reflecting and/or interactive.

Week Two - Chosen Exemplar Building

Chosen Building for further analysis
Balaam Residence

Once researching all three exemplar buildings I came to the decision of further analysing Shaun Lockyer's Balaam Residence. The overall concept of the house and how the client brief was achieved was very impressive. The incorporation of grand scales with intimate spaces was very prominant and achieved through such precision. The use of natural materials and green features is very fitting with today's economic situation and this should be achieved in all future projects.

Analysis through the design and construction drawings of the Balaam Residence will follow:

Week One - Exemplar Analysis

A House is a Container of Human Activities

The house was designed to accommodate basic holiday living requirements; i.e. sleeping, eating, abluting and leisure spaces. The design is centered around a core, positioned on the garden boundary side of the site. The open scale living is beneficial in the warmer months, taking full advantage of the Queensland weather and the water views. During the winter months, the living space is insulated, providing an enclosed space for optimum use. The use of the large glass openings still allows heat and natural light in when closed during the colder months.

A House is a Delightful Experience

The design of this house is predominantly for relaxing and to absorb the natural surroundings. The two storey Eco house is nestled into the slope of the site creating sanctuary. The use of timber paneling and glass openings allows the space to be free and open. This gives the sense that you are amongst the trees and amid the sites natural surrounds.

Building 3 - Mooloomba Beach House

Architect - Andresen O'Gorman Architects

House Location - North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia

Date - 1998

A House is an Environmental Filter

The mooloomba Beach House "interacts with the garden through a freedom combination of structure and cladding that lightly frames a series of multipurpose outdoor living areas." The use of natural sustainable materials (timber, plywood and hardwood) are fitting to the location and the natural vegetation. Andresen O'Gorman Architects chose the sustainable option of green structural timber, being cheaper and more readily available.

Week One - Exemplar Analysis

A House is a Delightful Experience

The client brief stated the importance of creating a family home, taking advantage of the water front position whilst not losing the idea of real "architecture, interior design, decor, landscape architecture and art". Each space clearly signifies what the space is used for, with living spaces segmented from the private and individual space - the importance of zoning was of importance to the client. The house not only provides comfortable, conventional living spaces but includes beautifully crafted indoor/outdoor spaces. For example, the pool which is the 'centerpiece of life' cantilevers over the driveway and entry, drawing people in to experience the relaxed living spaces of this home.

Week One - Exemplar Analysis

A House is a Container for Human Activities

"Challenged by a very public realm within which to build a house, while trying to reconcile the idiosyncratic issues of view, privacy, security, and sanctuary"

The Balaam Residence has been designed to take full advantage of the Queensland heat, with prominent decking centered on the idea of riverside living. Timber paneling provide the outdoor space with privacy from surrounding noise pollution and protection from sun, wind and rain exposure. The Pool, positioned on the first floor is the centerpiece from life - main communal entertainment areas surround this space. This is fitting with Queensland's lifestyle, having optimum living space outdoor whilst still shaded from extreme weather conditions; predominantly sun exposure. There is signifcant space for a large family to enjoy communal and private time, indoor and out.

Building 2 - Balaam Residence

Architect - Shaun Lockyer (Arkhefield)

House Location - Hamilton, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Date - 2006

A House is an Environmental Filter
The Balaam Residence, situated on the Brisbane River takes full advantage of the Queensland weather and its location. The house "animates the street, river boardwalk, both through form and sculptures." It is designed with large family outdoor decking areas, absorbing the Queensland lifestyle. The house is fitted with natural sustainable materials (zinc aluminium, rich timbers and raw battens), aswell as green features including rain water harvesting, solar hot water system, cross ventilation etc. "Living areas and the outdoor living spaces provide protection from the elements, views and cross ventilation".

Week One - Exemplar Analysis

A House is a Delightful Experience
"The house is a path, both literally and figuratively". Siza has always had the fixation of "making games of stairs, creating ambiguity about what's going up and what's going down." The house has a sense of mystery and journey achieved through the stair cases and the angled rooms etc. This is apparent with every movement one takes through the space, 'you never know what is around the corner'. The indoor stairs are mirrored by the outdoor stairs adhering to the sense of mystery and journey. Keeping with the theme of mystery, the stairs are never completely revealed from one space. "Some can be seen from afar when others seem to end abruptly."

Week One - Exemplar Analysis

A House is a Container of Human Activities

The Casa Tolo was designed like a 'giant' stair, to literally 'walk' the building down the slope. The house is made up of conventional living, sleeping, dining and abluting spaces. Each space is on its own level with each room opening onto a terrace garden on the roof of the space below.

Week One - Exemplar Analysis

Building 1 - Casa Tolo

Architect - Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira

House Location - Lugar Das Carvalihinhas, Portugal

Date - 2005

A House is an Environmental Filter

The Casa Tolo is positioned in the Portuguese mountainous terrains. It is set back into the mountain as if it were to be cascading down the steep slope. the architect has take full aesthetic advantage by positioning the house into the slope, providing a flowing value to the space. It has been angled in such a way to take complete advantage of the valley views, not obstucting from the natural surroundings. The house faces south, receiving optimal solar exposure and views of the surrounding terrain. Casa Tolo is naturally unified with the landscape responding to its natural setting.
